Cost Efficiency and Scope Economies of Crop and Livestock Farms in Missouri AgEcon
Wu, Shunxiang; Prato, Anthony A..
This study investigates productive efficiency for a sample of Missouri crop-only (specialized) and integrated crop-livestock (diversified) farms using a cost frontier approach. Results suggest that significant cost inefficiency exists among sample farms. Lower cost efficiency in both types of farms was attributed to improper scale of operations and mis-allocation of inputs. On average, diversified farms were as technically and scale efficient as specialized farms. Lower allocative efficiency diluted gains in technical efficiency and resulted in greater cost inefficiency for diversified farms than for specialized farms. Technical efficiency was independent of farm size, whereas allocative, scale, and scope efficiencies were not.

ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF PLANTING FLEXIBILITY AND CONSERVATION 1990 FARM BILLS FOR FUTURE FARM LEGISLATION AgEcon
Wu, Shunxiang; Walker, David J.; Brusven, Merlyn A..
The interaction of the planting flexibility and conservation compliance provisions from the 1985 and 1990 farm bills was evaluated using an integrated systems model. Results showed that flex and compliance policy in combination reduced net returns and government costs, diluted environmental benefits of conservation compliance, and increased grower responsiveness to market signals, compared with conservation compliance alone. Strict compliance and higher flex levels were the most detrimental to farm income and environmental goals. Decoupling in current and future policy proposals will promote conservation goals. Budgetary reductions in future farm policy could reduce conservation incentives.

IDAHO'S CHEESE INDUSTRY: THE COMPETITIVE SITUATION AgEcon
Werner, Chris; Foltz, John C.; Wu, Shunxiang.
As the fifth largest U.S. cheese-producing state, Idaho increased cheese production by 182 percent (390 million pounds) between 1992 and 1995. Idaho's competitiveness in the cheese industry is important not only to processors but also to dairy farmers since approximately 85 percent of the milk produced in Idaho is processed into cheese. Idaho was found to be competitive with other major cheese-producing states, including California, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and New York. Among the study states, Idaho was the second lowest-cost provider, behind California, to selected cities across the United States. Idaho's advantage was the lowest production costs, excluding milk cost, due in large part to lower labor and utility rates.

MULTIPLE-OBJECTIVE DECISION MAKING FOR AGROECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT AgEcon
Prato, Anthony A.; Fulcher, Christopher L.; Wu, Shunxiang; Ma, Jian.
Multiple-objective decision making (MODEM) provides an effective framework for integrated resource assessment of agroecosystems. Two elements of integrated assessment are discussed and illustrated: (1) adding noneconomic objectives as constraints in an optimization problem; and (2) evaluating tradeoffs among competing objectives using the efficiency frontier for objectives. These elements are illustrated for a crop farm and watershed in northern Missouri. An interactive, spatial decision support system (ISDSS) makes the MODEM framework accessible to unsophisticated users. A conceptual ISDSS is presented that assesses the socioeconomic, environmental, and ecological consequences of alternative management plans for reducing soil erosion and nonpoint...

PRODUCTIVITY GROWTH AND ITS COMPONENTS IN CHINESE AGRICULTURE AFTER REFORMS AgEcon
Wu, Shunxiang; Walker, David J.; Devadoss, Stephen.
We investigate the temporal and spacial nature of productivity growth and its components in Chinese agriculture from 1980-1995 using nonparametric Malmquist procedures. The results indicate that the high rate of technical progress and deterioring efficiency performance coexisted in Chinese agriculture. Policies encouraging technical progress should be accompanied by successful technological diffusions.
